Bonhoeffer Tools

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German theologian and anti-Nazi resistor executed by the regime in 1945, offered one of the most penetrating analyses of human behavior under ideological pressure. In his 1942 reflection "After Ten Years" (from Letters and Papers from Prison), he observed the widespread conformity among educated Germans—not primarily through malice, but through a peculiar form of stupidity.
Bonhoeffer wrote:
Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice. One may protest against evil; it can be exposed and, if need be, prevented by use of force. Evil always carries within itself the germ of its own subversion in that it leaves behind at least a sense of unease in human beings. Against stupidity we are defenseless. Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed – in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical – and when facts are irrefutable they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self-satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack. [...] This much is certain, that it is in essence not an intellectual defect but a human one.
Crucially, Bonhoeffer clarified that this “stupidity” is not low IQ, poor education, or innate dullness. It is a moral and sociological surrender of independent thought—often by highly intelligent people—under the influence of power, group belonging, or ideological certainty. Intelligent individuals become “mindless tools,” repeating slogans, filtering out contradictory facts, and attacking challengers because their identity is now fused with the approved narrative. Facts threaten self-image, so they are dismissed. Reality is held at bay.
The 2020s Leftist Tool Phenomenon
This dynamic is vividly on display among many high-achieving, articulate, successful figures aligned with progressive causes in the 2020s. They are not “stupid” in the conventional sense—many boast elite credentials, wealth, fame, and cultural influence. Yet they function as Bonhoeffer Tools: reliable instruments advancing a mainstream-approved worldview, allergic to counter-evidence, and compelled to signal disdain for dissenters.
Robert De Niro is Exhibit A: a legendary actor who has devolved into a self-parody, delivering badly scripted TDS tirades that present less as principled stands than performative rage. Sadly, this Platonic Ideal of a Bonhoeffer Tool doesn't seem to be faking.

The pattern repeats across the mainstream media: Kathy Griffin’s infamous photoshoot with a mock-severed Trump head; late-night hosts like Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and David Letterman transforming comedy shows into struggle sessions with punchlines; NBA coaches Steve Kerr and Doc Rivers injecting deranged rants into post-game pressers; award shows like the Grammys, Tonys & Oscars featuring noxious virtue-signaling. All are celebrated cool-kids who excel in the art of alienating Americans who love being American.
These individuals are not lacking intellect or achievement. They are Tools because their self-image—the virtuous, enlightened progressive—depends on unwavering adherence to the narrative. Deviation risks ostracism from their peer group and loss of status.
Bonhoeffer Tools in Everyday Life
The impact hits Americans in each and every one of our treasured personal relationships: friends, classmates, teachers, colleagues, clergy, coreligionists, and, of course, family.
Here's an exercise: Tally everyone who can claim your grandparents as an ancestor, especially younger generations—and a striking number qualify as Bonhoeffer Tools. They feel compulsively compelled to disdain MAGA relatives, viewing Trump supporters not as fellow citizens with differing priorities but as existential threats to decency, and stupid to boot. (The irony is thick.)
Thanksgiving tables grow tense or silent. “MAGA” becomes the word not spoken; Trump is “he who must not be named,” evoking a Voldemort-like taboo. Rational discussion of results—The border is now secure; The price of gas is down; Tariffs clearly benefit America; Crime is lower than EVER; Fentanyl no longer floods the country; The Gaza hostages are home.—triggers irritation, dismissal, or outright attack. Prejudgments filter reality: inconvenient facts are “inconsequential” or “disinformation.” The Tool’s identity as the compassionate, informed one is at stake; challenging their worldview feels like an assault on the self.
Why Reasoning Fails & Caution Is Warranted
Bonhoeffer explains precisely why persuasion is futile: the Tool is “utterly self-satisfied,” reasons fall on deaf ears, and challenges provoke defensiveness rather than reflection. Their mainstream-approved worldview is not a set of negotiable opinions but a core component of psychological identity—deeper than many realize. To break through would require years of capable therapy or a profound personal/climactic event that offers external “liberation,” such as a collapse of the enabling power structure or personal crisis.
Debate achieves nothing and can backfire, entrenching the Bonhoeffer Tool further. Worse, Bonhoeffer Tools are masters of projection, enthusiastically counter-punching any rhetoric with self-righteous fervor, sometimes hitting below the belt, or worse. Greater caution is warranted than with outright malice, as Bonhoeffer warned.
An Apt Lens for our Polarized Era
Bonhoeffer’s insight provides an apt lens for our polarized era. The danger lies not mainly in evil masterminds but in the legions of intelligent, accomplished people who have surrendered independent judgment to become Bonhoeffer Tools of Woke and/or Islamist Ideology, the former including gender, immigration, abortion & climate causes. the latter focused on anti-Western furor, whether merely rhetorical or fully kinetic.
Defenselessness in Debate ≠ Helplessness in Living Truth
Recognizing this pattern clarifies why family rifts persist, why celebrity rants feel scripted, and why facts alone rarely sway the committed. True breakthroughs demand more than argument—they require internal liberation, often sparked by external shocks or quiet personal reckoning. In the meantime, preserve your own clarity, protect relationships where possible, and remember: against such Bonhoeffer Tools, defenselessness in debate does not mean helplessness in living truth.

Draft a bnation blog post on Bonhoeffer’s Theory as applied to 2020s Lefties & Lefty sympathizers. I favor the word "tool" more than the word "stupid", since tools they are, notwithstanding high intellect, income, achievement & standing. Robert DeNiro is Exhibit A, an actor playing a parody of himself. Others include Kathy Griffin, Kimmel, Colbert & Letterman, not to mention Steve Kerr, Doc Rivers, most of the Grammys show, etc. Most Americans have close family members who are Bonhoeffer Tools. Count up all your grandparents' kin, including today's younger generations. Many are Bonhoeffer Tools, compulsively compelled to disdain their MAGA kin, or worse. MAGA becomes the word not spoken, Trump the one who shall not be named. Bonhoeffer explains that there is no reasoning with these lost souls. Their self-image, something they hold more dear than anything but their children, is contained in their mainstream-approved worldview. It's very deep for them, so deep it would take a capable therapist years for a breakthrough, and/or a climactic event to snap them out of it.

Not only are the Progressives using tools ... they don't care if they get killed in the process. In fact, a good death or two can be used by the tools and the media that supports them to spin a case against rationality (i.e., ICE doing their job just as they did under Biden and Obama).
I too have been wondering how so many people can have their priorities misplaced and not support deportation of illegals ,,, especially violent illegals. How many of these tools would like to take illegals into their own home to room and board?
